Prologue
The last thing Rebecca remembered before she finally drifted off into a fitful sleep was the clock in the hall chiming 2:00. Suddenly she was jolted wide awake. She sat straight up in the bed, listening for whatever sound had awakened her. She froze, listening. The stranger with the gun—was he in the house? In her doorway stood a figure, and Rebecca could see that it was a woman. A lady in white. Rebecca could only see the outline of the lady—and she was carrying a lantern. She stood straight and still, framed in the doorway. Rebecca sensed the eyes of the lady fixed upon her.
Rebecca held her breath, unable even to move her finger. She had never believed in ghosts and she refused to start now.
Then, with a barely discernable nod of the head, the figure turned and began to move towards the direction from which it had come. As Rebecca watched, fascinated, the light continued to grow dim, until it finally disappeared. Rebecca once again was enveloped in darkness….
