The Institute of Soteric Counseling

The Institute of Soteric Counseling was established to train and certify those who wish to serve in the Christian counseling field. The Institute, headquartered in Willis, Texas, will work with pastors, ministers, and lay leaders who are interested in developing their skills in counseling from the principles of Scripture.  The Institute has structured a demanding, yet reasonable, regimen for acquiring certification. Special training in counseling from Scripture involves specified course work, practical experience, a stringent reading schedule, and a thesis. Brief, on site training is also required, as is a portfolio for assignment of credits for experiential learning.

Soteric counseling focuses on using the Word and the Spirit in counseling with a view to ministering to the deepest needs of the human soul. “Soteric” is derived from the Greek word soteria, and is translated “salvation,” “deliverance,” “preservation,” and similar ways in the New Testament. The word “Soteric” presupposes an existing human condition which, while manifesting itself in a variety of ways, ultimately derives from spiritual origins and therefore demands spiritual ministrations. It sums up what the Holy Spirit can accomplish within a hurting soul.

Soteric counselors are committed to helping others find salvation and wholeness through biblical principles, incorporating the ministry of the Divine Comforter—the Holy Spirit. There is an emphasis on spiritual gifts and anointing which facilitates healing of the soul and destroys the yoke of spiritual bondage.

Soteric counseling is based on the inerrancy, authority, and sufficiency of the Word of God. Jesus Christ is recognized as the ultimate Counselor and ourselves as merely His human agents. Soteric counseling encourages Christ-centered, Holy Spirit empowered living, and the practical application of biblical truths with the goal of spiritual maturity, fruitfulness, and wholeness. Soteric counselors minister at the human level while the Spirit works inside the soul to accomplish healing and deliverance. 

The highlight each year is our annual conference. In addition to meeting the residency requirements for onsite training, students also receive one-on-one interaction, fellowship with others who believe in the inerrancy of Scripture, and interviews with ISC staff. At that time, successful candidates who have completed all the training requirements are awarded their certification as soteric counselors.
